Received 21 March 2003. Revision received 2 September 2003.

In this paper, the minimal positive entropy of pure braids is shown to be greater than Formula, independent of the braid index. For pure 3-braids, the minimal entropy is shown to be equal to Formula. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification 37E30 (primary), 37B40 (secondary).
